I just want to say something about Guided Reading. The Fountas and Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention is not as good for dyslexic students as the multisensory programs like Project Read or most of the other Orton Gillingham based programs. The "When I'm stuck, I can..." handout below promotes guessing! When a child gets to a word in a leveled reader and gets "stuck" many times the teachers says, "What does it look like?" The guessing game ensues! Instead of decoding the word, the child guesses! This is not good because the comprehension is lost trying to guess the one word!
Some schools handout this little "aid" to help students figure out a word when they're stuck. [This also doubles as a bookmark!] It is rather cute, but it is NOT going to help children figure out words when they're stuck!
At Miss Betsy's Place, I teach children how to decode words for reading, and encode words for spelling! My students learn real skills! Once children learn the 7 syllable types and how to syllabicate words, they can use this knowledge to decode words. They're armed with the ability to sound out words they don't know and then read them! All they need to do is practice reading! Eventually, they love reading!
